Shooting for the Sun: The Message of Middle School Reform

Hayes Mizell is NSDC's first Distinguished Senior Fellow and was recently director of the Program for Student Achievement at the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation. Mizell has been examining the challenges that teachers and principals face in their work to improve student achievement in grades six through eight. Mizell's insightful speeches and essays are gathered here as encouragement to those who "shoot for the Sun" in their work with our children. Hayes Mizell is a key partner in NSDC's special projects and NSDC is happy to offer his entire book for free download.

The speeches and writings in Shooting for the Sun cover three overarching issues for middle grades reform:
  • the many challenges middle schools face,
  • the importance of commiting to helping all children learn, and
  • the importance of professional development and accountability.
