The Story of Our Name Change

The Board of Trustees and staff of the National Staff Development Council are delighted to announce that as of September 1, 2010 NSDC is Learning Forward.

Over the years, NSDC’s Boards of Trustees have fielded questions about NSDC’s name. NSDC today is no longer a national organization. We have members around the globe. Our field today is more commonly called professional development or professional learning rather than staff development. NSDC is not a council, but rather a thriving membership association with a strong commitment to advocacy.

Learning is first in our new name, reminding us that learning is at the heart of our purpose and that learning creates our future. Learning Forward invites everyone to join us as we move ahead to ensure effective professional learning that results in student achievement. Learning Forward expresses our call to action, action we as a Board and as a membership association commit to each day to ensure effective teaching for every student. Our new name distinguishes us as both a membership association and an advocacy organization that marries practice, policy, and research.

"By changing our name to Learning Forward, NSDC is proving to be an adaptive organization that is working to meet the needs of its ever-growing membership and sphere of influence. Our association has become an international leader in the education sector. We have outgrown and outperformed our national council designation! However, with our new name, we will continue our mission to advance professional learning for student success."

Ingrid Carney
Board President

"I am amazed and delighted that even as NSDC has grown to become such an enormous organization, it has retained so much of the same spirit of the original members, while expanding its influence and impact in multiple ways. It is still a very human, inclusive organization and I am pleased that the new name will continue to reflect that influence. If asked, the Mother of NSDC (as I have sometimes been labeled) heartily votes "Yes!"

Betty Dillon-Peterson
NSDC Founder

"The name change signifies that the organization is proactive, committed to shaping what professional development should be, rather than merely reflecting what it has been. The name not only emphasizes learning but also signals that it must be continuous to propel educators to higher levels of performance. The challenge now is to translate the name and the vision into an ethic and a pattern of practice."

Hayes Mizell
Distinguished Senior Fellow

"I believe the new NSDC Name and Logo Learning Forward visually captures the essence and heart of educators at every level who embrace the philosophy that high quality professional learning can and does, move and motivate administrators, teachers and most importantly, students to higher levels of achievement. Learning Forward will launch NSDC into a new chapter of greatness and I am proud to belong to such an amazing organization."
